LIVE REVIEW: Ward Thomas @ Union Chapel

Last night (Tuesday, February 25th) British country music duo Ward Thomas brought their sold-out UK tour to London for a night of incredible live music at the iconic Union Chapel venue situated in Islington and the cold weather did not dampen the spirits of those in attendance as they were treated to a truly standout evening.

The biggest compliment you can pay Catherine and Lizzy [Ward Thomas] is that whether this was your first time seeing them live or your hundredth, you were left absolutely spellbound by their spinetingling harmonies and beautiful alto and soprano tones that complement each other so wonderfully.

They never fail to deliver a special showcase, whether full band or like last night with their breathtaking acoustic set where they were accompanied with just a keyboard, and guitar each and backed up on guitar by the brilliant Billy Adamson. They are simply one of the best live acts around and their set yesterday was nothing short of phenomenal.

During the Union Chapel show, they worked through tracks from each of their albums including their debut record and treated fans to a trip down memory lane with throwbacks such as ‘Footnotes, and ‘Almost Easy’ along with newer offerings including ‘This Is Gonna Gurt’ and ‘Little Girl Sorrow’ having opened the show with an awe-inspiring acapella cover of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ putting the spotlight firmly on their incredible vocal control.

They ended the night with a standing ovation closing out with their hit single ‘Carry You Home’ before being welcomed back on stage for a memorable encore performance of ‘Love Does’ which resulted in yet another much-deserved standing ovation for the insanely talented pair who throughout showcased their easy charm, sibling humour and undeniable artistry.

Ward Thomas are a wonderfully gifted duo and last night they further shone a light on their divine vocals and inspirational and heartfelt lyrical style which was further showcased through their individual songs that they wrote for each other before the other got married. There wasn’t one dull moment during the concert and once again they delivered a stunning orchestrated acoustic performance that will live long in the memory of those in attendance.
