Cameron Hawthorn Talks New Single ‘To Break Hers’

Cameron Hawthorn is the latest artist to be breaking out onto the mainstream country music market and thanks to his stunning vocal control, open and honest personality, and stellar songwriting skills he is one of the most talented performers to be rising up the ranks. His latest offering ‘To Break Hers’ is a truthful take on how he came to terms with his sexuality and how he now lives his life openly.

Here we chat exclusively with Cameron to discuss the track in more detail:

Your new single dropped today, what are your expectations from this release?

I try to not have expectations, but you can’t help but want the music to resonate with listeners. I put a big piece of my story into this song and video and at the end of the day, if one person is touched by it in some way, then that’s what matters most.

The lyrical story is extremely open and honest, how does it feel to be laying your soul bare in this way?

I’m all about being 100% honest and real in this new chapter of life with my music, and it feels very freeing to do that.

What are you hoping listeners take away from this track?

I hope that listeners will get a little more of a glimpse into my story. “Dancing in the Living Room” and “Oh Hot Damn!” are songs that I’m proud to sing now and relate to my life now, but “To Break Hers” is a song about life before that. And maybe someone out there will be able to relate.

Can you tell us a little about what the writing and recording day was like for this track?

I knew when I wrote this song with Lena Stone that I would release it. It just felt right from the moment we started discussing the idea and the melodies started coming out. Recording this song felt just as effortless. The production is minimal – it’s really about the story – and Greg Bates (producer) and I made sure there was a focus on that in the vocal.

Do you have any set goals in mind for what you’d like to achieve with this release?

Making the music video was a great way for me to get to bring the song to life even more, and I hope people are able to resonate with it. This song is the next piece of my story that will lead to my EP which is right around the corner.

The song is written about how your past relationship with a girl developed while you knew deep down you were gay, how vulnerable did you feel to be telling this story?

Writing this song was definitely therapy for me. It wasn’t until after coming out and looking back on the relationship and breakup that I was truly able to process it all. As a songwriter, I’ve been striving to be the most vulnerable I can be in my music, and I think this song may be the most vulnerable I’ve been thus far.

The country music scene has a pretty tough reputation when it comes to accepting LGBTQ+ artists, how have you found the level of acceptance around your own sexuality?

Honestly, I have found it to be very positive. I think we’re in a new time where there’s lots of support for the LGBTQ+ community from other artists and country music media like CMT.

Obviously, the scene like so many others is thankfully moving towards a more and open and safe environment for all, but what else do you feel needs to be done so that the LGBTQ+ community feels truly welcomed?

I think the LGBTQ+ community especially in small-town America needs to feel safe and I think the only way that will happen is through patience, understanding, and kindness on both sides. Exposure is key, but it has to be done gently.

With this offering, do you think you have a chance to knock some barriers down yourself?

I think I was born to tell my story and that’s what I’m doing through my music. If it breaks down barriers, I definitely see that as a positive.

Looking ahead, what’s your long-term dream in terms of your country music career?

I would love to collaborate with some of country music’s greats. I want to become the best singer-songwriter I can be, and I think that’s through co-writing and collaborating with the best of the best. And it’s always been my dream to perform at the ACMs and the Grammys. At the end of the day, I want to write and share music that touches people in some way and that’s the dream that I’m living now.
