EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Stu Basham Talks New Single ‘I’d Be Lyin’

As we begin to close out 2022, on-the-rise Nashville-based artist Stu Basham is bringing the year to an end in a big way with the release of his newest single titled ‘I’d Be Lyin’ – a brilliant offering that further allows him to grow his exciting and burgeoning career within Music City and beyond.

Here we speak exclusively with Stu Basham to discuss the track further:

Congratulations on your past success this year, how has it felt getting this recognition?

It’s been amazing. I’ve grinded and worked hard this year to get people to listen to the music and the response has been great. It’s hard starting from nothing but you just have to believe in the snowball effect. Once I get a few people to notice it gets a little easier for the next person to hear it or notice it. So I’m really happy where I’m at and hopefully, it only grows from here. I’m grateful for the people that have given the music a shot and taken time out of their busy schedules to interview me or do some type of post.

Following some great media attention for past releases, you’re now basing yourself in Nashville, how are you finding the music scene and support there?

I love everything about Nashville. This city is so inspiring and there’s so much talent here. The problem is it’s hard to get started and find your tribe early on, especially when you’re working full-time and have a family you want to see. So I’ve been solo writing almost all of my stuff in hopes that one day I’ll get to co-write with other people, through some type of publishing or record deal.

How does it feel to be releasing music independently in the heart of Music City?

I love the freedom it allows me to release songs I want to release and when I want to release them! I have half of next year lined up already with releases that I’m super excited about so I have the power to choose which song comes next and when. I love getting to have conversations with people like yourself and meeting new people online who share a love for country music. The country music community is so amazing that it’s no wonder how stars say “Thank you country music” when they receive their honors because this is such a powerful and inspiring community to be in.

Your new single is a duet with your wife, how did you two decide it was time to release a collaboration?

This song was on my list of releases that I was excited to put out but I knew it had to be a duet. My wife used to sing with me on shows when we lived in NYC but she’s focused more on being an actress since moving to Nashville but I asked her to jump on this song with me and I think it turned out great!

How did you find the process of writing and recording this track?

It was fun. My time is limited with songwriting right now as I have a full-time job and family I’m supporting so my writing usually happens at 5 am haha. I’ll try and hammer out a song before they all wake up and then I’ll pick the good ones that come out of those sessions. I knew this song was a good one right after I wrote it. I still had to do some tweaking to it but the overall idea was there. I wanted to turn it into a Coldplay pop-style song with the hook after the chorus and I think it conveys that pretty well. It actually was super pop-sounding in an earlier version but I decided to make it a little more country and fit my vibe.

What are you hoping listeners take away from the lyrical story?

I hope people enjoy the journey it takes them on. It’s meant to be a heartbreak song told between two different people and their perspectives. Both people are a little brokenhearted and they need to see that they were better together than apart but it seems they are too prideful to admit that.

Looking ahead, what does the rest of this year and the beginning of 2023 look like for you?

In a couple of weeks, I’m going to release a Christmas song called “Danger in a Manger” which I’m really excited about. Then to kick off 2023 I’m going to continue releasing tracks every month starting with a banger in January that I can’t wait to share. I’ll continue my push to spread the word on the music and connect with other like-minded people within the country community. I also like spotlighting a newer artist, like myself, every week on my social media accounts called my “Co-pilot of the week” so I can’t wait to hear the new music that’s coming out from other people and share that with the online community as well.
