EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Hansen Talks New Single ‘Mama’
Earlier this month, on-the-rise cross-genre singer/songwriter Jamie Hansen wowed with the release of her heartfelt new single titled ‘Mama’ which is an open letter to her own mother. The track has been well received so far and is continuing to garner rising streams and industry interest.
Here we talk exclusively with Jamie Hansen to discuss the song in more detail:
Congratulations on the new single, how have you found the response so far?
Thank you so much! ‘Mama’ has been a really special release, simply due to the enthusiastic response from listeners. Everyone has had such kind things to say – how much they relate to the song, that they shared it with their own mom, that it made them cry, etc. It’s been really heartwarming.
What’s it been like sharing such a personal song with the world?
Sharing a song like this is similar to standing in front of a classroom naked. You’re baring your soul for others to see, and in some ways, it is hard not to shy away from that. But after you get used to it, it’s really empowering, especially when you know other people relate to it and are going through the same thing.
The song is a letter to your mom, what was that writing process like for you?
I wrote ‘Mama’ by myself at an ancient piano at Flat Creek Ranch outside of Jackson, Wyoming, which is phenomenally beautiful. I never really chose to write this song – it forced its way out of me. ‘Mama’ came from a lot of inner turmoil, which was confronted in this writing session. It was painful and inspiring at the same time.
Who have you worked with on the track to bring the overall vision to life?
I worked with Zach Radcliff and Chuck Alkazian on ‘Mama’ – the same team I had for my last single. Zach took my original piano melody and embellished upon it. Chuck and Zach built the backing track for the song, Chuck produced it, and Zach added his backing vocals. This was the first song we recorded together, and I’m incredibly proud of our work.
What are you hoping to achieve long term with this release?
My dream for ‘Mama’ would be for it to land film placement, which is extremely competitive. Mostly though, I just want people to connect with the song and feel something. If that happens, I’ve done my job.
Can we expect a full-length project off of you soon?
Long-term, yes! I will say I have several more singles to put out before that can happen – which will take me well into 2022. I am so excited for those to come out! And I do have a full-length project I’m currently working on, but I don’t have a date set.
What are you hoping listeners take away from the lyrics?
I’m glad you brought up the lyrics because that is always the most important part of writing for me. My favourite line from this song is “Mama forgive me. I was born to be free. I was never meant for society.” I cried writing it – I felt deeply misunderstood by those around me, but not in a teenage angst way. I was called by God to pursue my purpose, and it felt quite lonely. I hope that listeners feel inspired to pursue their own calling, and don’t deny it.
