EXCLUSIVE: Vic Allen Talks ‘Iris’ Cover

As we rounded out December and 2021, country/Americana singer/songwriter Vic Allen brought the month and year to a close with the release of her gorgeous version of the Goo Goo Dolls’ hit single ‘Iris’ with her brilliant version being expertly produced by renowned music maker Barnabas Shaw.

Here we chat exclusively with Vic Allen to discuss the track further:

You recently shared your version of ‘Iris’, how excited were you by the fan reaction?

It’s been really great to see such a positive reaction from my listeners. This is of course my first cover release so I was a little nervous – especially as it’s such a well-known song that people love! But it’s had great feedback so I’m happy with how it turned out.

Was their excitement the main driving force behind you releasing it as an official single?

Definitely. I haven’t thought too much about releasing covers in the past as I’ve been too focused on my original music, but my version of this song became popular on TikTok so I decided to release it as a thank-you!

With the official release, what are your main goals?

My main goals with this release are really to provide something new and a little different to my current fans, as well as offering something familiar to potential new listeners.

This has been a great way to start the new year for you, do you plan on sharing more covers soon?

I definitely want to continue focusing on original music, but I’d also be open to releasing the occasional cover as this one’s been fun to do!

Why did you choose ‘Iris’ in particular to cover?

I chose ‘Iris’ because it became a really highly requested cover on my TikTok live streams. I also love Goo Goo Dolls and have seen them live three times, so I’m glad that my first cover release is a song that I feel so connected to.

For those who haven’t yet heard your version, what can they expect from your rendition?

My rendition is definitely very stripped down! It’s really just a voice and a guitar, which is nice as this song has beautiful lyrics so it allows them to take centre stage.

Looking ahead, what else does 2022 hold in store for you?

I’m hoping that 2022 will be a year of new music! I have SO many songs I want to share and a few have already been taken to the studio, so I’m looking forward to sharing them with the world soon. 22 has always been my lucky number, so I’m crossing my fingers that this year is the one!
