National Album Day 2021 – Top 5 LP’s By Women 2020 – 2021

This coming Saturday (October 16th) the UK will celebrate National Album Day with this year’s theme focusing on women in music and to celebrate the achievements of some of our favourite female country crossover artists we have put together a list of our top 5 LP’s released between 2020 and 2021.

1: Twinnie – Hollywood Gypsy

The British pop-country singer/songwriter released her debut LP just as the world was shutting down in response to the COVID pandemic – a turbulent time for any artist to share new music but particularly hard-hitting for an artist at the start of their career. However, despite the strange timings and knockback in terms of promotional outlets, Twinnie delivered the soundtrack to the lockdown for many. The LP was a major barrier-breaking soundtrack with songs crossing several genres including mainstream pop, storytelling country, and soft guitar-led rock. It’s a collection that is authentic, and honest to its core.

2: Mickey Guyton – Remember Her Name

This album arrived in late 2021 with the US trailblazer showcasing that she is ready to create her own lane in country music. The collection has been years in the making and it does not disappoint. It’s an inspirational open letter to her fans, and to anyone who has ever felt less than. Mickey is a voice for the unheard and she is opening doors for Black country artists as she looks to break the glass ceiling. This tracklist is beautifully crafted and a timeless body of work that will stand the test of time.

3: Carly Pearce – 29: Written In Stone

Proving that beauty can come out of brokenness, the Kentucky native crated this stellar project following a year of hurt that included emotional turmoil. It’s an album that comes from her heart and soul with songs narrating the last year of turbulence. There are messages of hope laced throughout as Carly Pearce looks to show that the pain only served to lift her to a higher place. This is an LP that puts her at the forefront of a fresh new wave of female artists creating pure country music – it’s a body of work that inspires.

4: Ward Thomas – Invitation

Written and recorded during the UK national lockdowns this collection from Ward Thomas bridged a gap between the pop and country worlds and allowed the twin sisters to experiment with new sounds they may not have had the opportunity to do if they had not been stuck at home for such long periods. It’s an invitation to better times, and a glimpse into the world we will re-enter post-pandemic. It’s a celebration of the parties, the invites, and the relationships we will get back to. The songs are stunningly crafted and showcase another side of Ward Thomas with a soundscape that sweeps across multiple styles.

5: The Shires – Good Years

This tracklist from Ben and Crissie once again allow them to demonstrate their soaring harmonies with a project that includes stunning ballads and thumping sing-a-long anthems. The duo never fail to deliver when it comes to a full-length body of work and this LP once again puts the spotlight on their writing talent and standout vocals. It’s a beautiful LP that dropped just at the start of March a few weeks before the first lockdown marking the beginning of an extremely difficult time period but this album was a beautiful escape for many during the months that followed.
