EXCLUSIVE: Rod Black Talks New Single ‘Laketown’

Earlier this year, critically acclaimed country singer/songwriter Rod Black released his latest single ‘Laketown’ with the track quickly grabbing the attention of fans, and industry insders alike. Now, with the song officially being sent to Canadian radio we can expect it to become a big hit for the performer.

Here we chat exclusively with Rod Black to discuss the track further:

Congratulations on the release of your new single, how’s the response been so far?

Thank you! The response has been very positive so far, which I’m always thankful for. It was the right time of year to get people excited about the summer and give them a song that would put them in a good mood whenever they hear it. This was one of our goals and I feel like we accomplished that.

Can you give us a little insight into the writing process for this track?

I was in a writing session in the winter months with Jeff Johnson and we were talking about the summertime. Jeff came up with a really cool guitar riff and the song just formed from there,

Who have you work with to bring the vision to life?

Jeff and I wrote “Laketown” together. We’ve got a past history of writing a lot. Beyond the guitar riff that he came up with musically, we started talking about writing a song about good times on the lake, memories at the cabin, and just enjoying the sun. That’s really the spirit of the song and once we finished writing “Laketown”, Jeff brought our vision into the studio to produce it.

How does it feel to be releasing new music during this time?

I feel that COVID grounded us all and really made us appreciate the finer things in life. In my case, I felt it was important to take advantage of the downtime to focus on family and songwriting. Living in a bubble with a guitar isn’t a bad thing, but heading into 2021, I felt the time was right to start sharing some music again, so that’s what I’ve done this year with “Barely Gettin’ By” and now “Laketown”.

The song was sent to country radio on June 7th, how excited are you about it reaching more ears?

I always love having a new song go to radio. It’s like a new creation that no one has heard yet on the airwaves. More than anything else, I just appreciate people taking the time to listen to it.

How pivotal a role do you think radio can have on a single’s success?

Radio is very important. It gives a chance for people to send in their feedback to the radio DJs, but radio success is a bonus that helps to get your song out to the masses.

What are you hoping listeners take away from the lyrical story?

Hopefully the lyrics bring back past summertime memories, like hanging with your friends while making new ones along the way.

Looking ahead, what else does 2021 have in store for you?

I’m looking forward to getting back on stage. Here in Canada, I’m working on a couple of shows for late summer. Also, I’ll be releasing a new EP in the fall, so I’m definitely stoked to share that with everyone as well.
