EXCLUSIVE: Abigail Neilson Talks New Single ‘Seams’

Country-pop talent Abigail Neilson is back with her powerful new single ‘Seams’ – a heartwrenching track about heartbreak and the raw aftermath of a breakup. It’s an authentic, real release from the multi-talented artist and one that allows her to connect on a deeper level with her growing listenership.

Here we chat with Abigail Neilson to discuss the track further:

How excited are you to be sharing new music this year?

Truly so excited. My favorite thing right now is sharing new music and giving people something to hold onto like these songs I’ve been releasing, so I’m excited to see what people think of, ‘Seams,” as well as the other music I plan to release this year!

How are you finding the process of releasing music during this time period?

I think the process is a lot different right now than it was when I was releasing music a year ago. So much has changed this past year, but I’ve been learning to adapt as well as utilize the time I have for learning and growing.

Can you tell us a little about the overall writing and recording process for this track?

When I was writing “Seams,” I had just gotten my heart broken and didn’t know what the reason was. So, I was feeling lonely and heartbroken, and usually when I feel these things I turn to writing. So, I started writing out how I felt, things I wish I could’ve said to someone, and it turned into being the lyrics to “Seams.” When it came time to record the song, I knew I wanted it to be on piano and have strings. I wanted this one to feel and sound different than my other singles and have the overall tone change when it comes on.

Who have you worked with to bring this vision to life?

Robbie Artress produced this song, along with my other singles, and did absolutely fantastic. He made what I was feeling and hoping it would end up sounding like a reality and even better than I ever could have imagined. Gideon and Gabe Klein as well as Ellen Angelico did the instrumental tracking for this song and they truly made it sound so beautiful. In the studio when Gabe had sat down at the piano and started playing the intro, I knew this song was going to feel magical in a sense.

Where did you look to for inspiration when crafting the lyrical story – was it purely your own story or were other factors in play?

The inspiration came from my own true heartbreak, and when it comes to writing songs about my life, I tend to not hold back anything. Every word in this song are thoughts that had gone through my head while I was dealing with my heartache.

What are you hoping fans take away from the song?

I hope that they will be able to relate to it and know that they’re never alone. I think a lot of the time when we deal with heartbreak, we shut out the world and want to be alone because it feels like we’re the only ones feeling that way. I want my fans to know that no matter how hard life gets, they’re never alone and I hope this song can be that reminder for them.

Along with sharing the official audio you’ve also released a music video, how excited are you for fans to see the visual?

The music video for, “Seams,” is hands down my favorite music video of mine so far. Kyle Olthoff was the master behind the cinematography and has filmed all of my previous music videos. This video truly shows a more vulnerable side of myself that no one has really seen before. I’m excited to see how people react to how I’ve grown not just as an artist, but as a person as well.

What was the filming day like for the clip?

It was a 2-day shoot in August of 2020. Day 1 was filmed at Gold Creek Pond in Snoqualmie, WA and it’s such a gorgeous place. It felt like we had escaped reality for a few hours and had entered a magical place. The second day we filmed at Rattlesnake Lake where we did all of the water scenes. This was also where we took all of the photos for the single. When I wrote this song, I knew I wanted to have a water element so when my photographer, Taylor Olthoff, said “alright lay in the water,” I didn’t hesitate one bit.

How much do you think creating and sharing a music video adds to the overall success of a single?

I think people really love having a visual to a song and can really captivate the listener in a new way. I love having music videos for my singles because I want my audience to be drawn into the world I was in when I was living the story of what that song is about. Since these songs are about my life, I want to share it with the people who support me in creative ways, and having music videos absolutely helps that.

Looking ahead, what else can we expect from you this year?

You can absolutely expect a lot more music from me this year, I have a lot planned and absolutely cannot wait to share it with everyone!
