EXCLUSIVE: Adam Rutledge Talks New Single ‘Unwind’

Fast-rising Nashville based recording artist Adam Rutledge has today (Friday, August 14th) shared his stellar new single ‘Unwind’ which is a brilliant country-infused offering that showcases his outstanding vocal prowess and standout songwriting talents to perfection as he delivers one of the best releases of the year so far.

Here we chat exclusively with Adam Rutledge to discuss his latest single further:

Your new single is out now, what are your expectations for this release?

I hope “Unwind” is a springboard for the listener and that it perks their curiosity as to what’s on the rest of the record. One of the reasons we wanted to release this as the first single is because it’s got a different vibe than anything I’ve done in the past and what’s on country radio today.

What are you hoping fans take away from the lyrical story?

I hope they take it literally…these are stressful times we’re living in and we all need to take a minute to Unwind every now and then. Lyrically this song is very sexy. It’s a credit to my wife who I’ve been with for over 20 years and married to for over 14 that still makes me feel this way and makes me want to write songs like this.

Can you give us a little insight into the writing process for this offering?

My wife came home one day, and I could tell by the look on her face it had been a particularly challenging day and that’s where the idea for the song came from. The rest of the song was written around the concept of being her hero…” saving the day.” Jeff Smith, Julie Wood, and I wrote this song together with Julie really “saving the day” on the second verse. Jeff and I were kinda stuck so we brought the song to her and she NAILED it!

What was the average recording day like for this song?

We recorded all of this from our home studios. We were never in the same room together. Gregg Lohman recorded his drum parts at his home in Nashville, Jeff Smith recorded all his parts at his home studio in Nashville and I did the same from my home studio in Fincastle, VA. I REALLY liked recording this way. So, the average recording day was: wake up, make coffee and walk into my studio in my pajamas and make magic happen!

How does it feel to be releasing new music with much of the world still in full or semi lockdown?

Well initially we thought it might be a bad idea since we couldn’t go out and support the record with a tour, but we found out pretty quickly that people were hungry for new music. We also took this opportunity to grow as engineers and mixing engineers in the studio. Unwind was engineered, mixed, mastered, and produced by Jeff Smith and I. It was all done “in house” so to speak. It also seemed like a great time for a distraction not only for myself but for the listeners who could use a break as well. Nothing like a new song to take your mind off of reality for a few minutes.

With this latest release do you have any set goals in mind for what you’d like to achieve?

I really just hope it sets the tone and energizes my fan base as well as any first time listeners for the new album.

Do you have any plans to share an official visual for this song?

Yes! A lyric video and performance video at the very least. I’m hoping for a music video as well, but that’s still in limbo at the moment.

Was this always planned as your next official single release or was it an organic decision?

It was pretty organic. We sent a handful of songs from the new record to my great friend Scott Stevens, Program Director at 107.9 WYYD in Lynchburg, VA, and got his opinion on what to release as the next single. I trust his ear and his opinion completely and he picked “Unwind.”

So we can expect this to act as the launchpad for a full-length project?

Absolutely! The full-length record will be released early fall. I’m super excited about it! We’re planning on including about 13-14 songs. This will be my first full-length album. My last album release was an EP.

Looking ahead, what else can we expect from you this year?

Hopefully, we get past this awful virus and things get back to some sort of normal so we can go out and tour, but until then I’ll be promoting this new album and getting started on writing the next one.
