EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Angel White Chats Backstage @ C2C Festival

This past weekend C2C Festival took over the O2 Arena in North Greenwich with the event running until Sunday. Music & Tour News were lucky enough to land media access for the three days and caught up with Angel White backstage.

How are you finding your London experience so far?

Amazing! I fell in love with it the first two days I was here and it’s only gotten better every day.

How have you found the experience of the UK crowd compared to the US?

Everybody is instantly receptive as opposed to someone being like “Oh, I’ll wait to see if it’s good”. Like, they’re just already there for it. I think that’s the biggest thing. I think they find more joy in discovering. A lot of people like discover out here which is good.

Is there one song that’s connected more with UK audiences than you thought it would?

I have a song called ‘Outlaw’ that’s about to come out at the end of the month and for a while, we were playing it back home and then we kind of took it out of the set but here I’ve been playing it and the receptions been a lot better.

Are you looking to headline over here at any point?

Oh yeah! I mean, that’s one of the first things we talked about and then also talked about doing a residency which would be so sick and that just means I get to stay here a little longer. I’m trying to come back as soon as I can.

What would you say has been the biggest learning curve of your career so far?

One thing I consistently reinstate to myself is taking my time. Now like just the way things move, the internet or this or that, streaming platforms it’s like a lot of people try to rush things to keep up but anything that I’ve done is going to be new to everyone when it comes out. Just finding that balance is probably the biggest thing that I consistently have to maintain.

On the back of that, what do you feel is the biggest challenge you’re facing as an artist in today’s landscape?

Not that I’m not faced with challenges but the biggest thing for me is just challenging myself to be better. That’s the best challenge if there is gonna be one. Just gotta make it your own challenge.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Again, “take your time”. Truly, cos there was such a developmental period for me when I was like “Oh, I can take my time”. It was four years of just crafting as opposed to having this idea that I was gonna release everything that I made. That was another question that I asked myself, if I couldn’t release it would I still be making it? I know I would.

How do you feel your sound has developed in that time?

Oh my goodness, just like more control of my voice for sure, I definitely think I’ve become a way better guitarist. I’ve only been playing for like seven years but some people think I’ve been playing my whole life which is a huge compliment. Just continuing to chip away is the goal.

What’s been your career highlight to date?

Coming to London! Like truly, I always wanted my music to take me overseas. Like, I probably could have taken care of that anyway or gone to any other country at any point but I always wanted it to be for music, and here we are at the biggest country festival in London. It’s a dream come true.

How do you feel the country music community has embraced you?

I would say fully. Because I kinda came in over the past year or so and started being in the eye of country music. So, I think I’ve been embraced which is the best thing that could happen.

What are your major goals over the next five years?

Next five years I would say to just keep playing shows, I want to do a couple hundred shows a year if not more which means I would be on the road a lot which is also the goal. We got an album coming soon so once that’s out I think that’s where things will pick up. If I can tour for two years straight I will and then on to the second album and just continue to build and make these connections and bring more people in.

How do you juggle your home life with being on the road so much?

I feel like my home life is being on the road. But when I’m at home there are only a few things that I do, playing pool, taking care of the horses or sitting on my porch with my cat. It’s pretty simple.

One last question for you, what would be your message to your UK fans?

Thank you! Because they’re the only reason that I can do these things and I hope to continue to build so that I can stay over here for longer and do more shows.
