EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Emily McGill Talks New Single ‘I’m Done’

This past Friday (January 20th), Nashville-based singer/songwriter Emily McGill released her stellar new single titled ‘I’m Done’ which follows on from the recent release of ‘Write You Out Of My Memory’ and further builds on the foundation of success she is setting for herself in the music industry.

Here we chat exclusively with Emily McGill to discuss the track in more detail:

Congratulations on the success you garnered in 2022, how did you find that year creatively?

Thank you so much! This year was a busy year creative-wise. Spending time surrounded by people who inspire me, love writing as much as I do, and travelling as much as possible kept me busy writing a lot.

What was your personal highlight of last year?

I had a few highlights in 2022, but one of my favourites was playing at City Winery with my boss Steve Cropper. It was a magical night. The energy in the room that night was something that’s impossible to recreate, and I’m so thankful to have been a part of it.

How do you feel heading into 2023?

Ready. I have an EP coming, more shows, and more writing sessions booked so I’m looking forward to it!

And building on last year’s success, you released a new single on January 20, how excited are you to be starting this new era?

 Excited is an understatement when it comes to “I’m Done”. This song means so much to me and it’s different from some of the other things I’ve written. 

Can you give us a little insight into the writing process for this one?

I wrote this song when I was living back home in Jackson Tennessee with a guy named Ray Barnette. We sat down to write and I was feeling inspired by rock music that particular day. I wanted it to feel edgy but also have the sentiment of letting go and moving on. Ray and I wrote this song in about an hour and it just grew from there.

What are you hoping listeners take away from this one?

I hope that everyone who hears this song takes away something different. Something that they need to take away from it. Personally, I feel like this song is a metamorphosis song and it helped me to let go of some things I was desperately ready to let go of.

Looking ahead, what else does this year hold for you?

Lots more music! Of course, I am going into this year with an idea of what I (ideally) want it to look like and with my own personal goals, but I honestly I just hope it holds some peace and a lot more growth.
