EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Ward Thomas Talk Upcoming Album ‘Music In THe Madness’

In March 2023, British country music sibling duo Ward Thomas will release their hotly anticipated new studio album titled ‘Music In The Madness’ which sees them returning to their sonic roots of older records such as ‘From Where We Stand’ and the record-making number 1 ‘Cartwheels’.

Here we chat exclusively with the twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas to discuss the collection in more detail:

 Congratulations on the new album and tour announcement, how does it feel to be releasing music in an active industry once again? 

Thank you Laura :). It feels great and also a bit nerve-wracking, we’re both really excited about this next project and we hope the industry will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. 

You’ve shared a couple of songs off the tracklist so far and they seem like your most introspective releases yet, did you go into the sessions with the purpose to create songs with real meaning? 

I think the reason for this is due to a lot of different things. One is the world being in the place it is at the moment and so many aspects of change going on, we’re both a little older at this point in our career, Catherine is now married so we tend to have a lot more introspective conversations at this point of our lives. We have always channelled our thoughts, worries, anxieties, emotions, and opinions into our creativity as that’s our way of making sense of the world and of ourselves individually. So I guess we went into the sessions passionate and inspired by many different things and that’s come out in our latest project. 

You’ve definitely gone back to your country roots on this record too, especially if you compare it to Invitation, was that a conscious decision this time? 

Yes, that was a conscious decision, we both feel at home in the country, americana, songwriting world so wanted to go back to our roots. 

This album also feels heavily inspired by the last 2 years and what we’ve all been through, how has creating this record helped you deal with all of that? 

It’s helped us by making sense of the world and it’s helped us by pouring all our energy from exterior things into our creativity. Been a great outlet. 

What are you hoping listeners take away from the songs on this LP?

We hope it’ll take people through a musical journey of hope and light and positivity. We hope people will be able to find it reflective. We do love our ballads and acoustic songs and have included a good few options of those. But overall we hope people will love it and enjoy it.  

Is there one song, in particular, you’re most excited to share? 

We love our song ‘Love Does’ we wrote on this album we can’t wait to share it. our favourites always change but that one we’re most excited about right now.  

I heard Love Does at the Song Suffragettes UK tour and feel that’s one of your best lyrical works yet, how did you find the writing process for that one? 

We loved writing this song. With these types of sessions, we get into such deep and meaningful conversations that turn into a reflective songs like this. We wanted to do a track on this album in harmony the whole way through and so we built the melody and topline around this idea. We wrote this with Aaron Eshuis and Rebekah Powell in Nashville and he started a beautiful guitar-picking pattern and we started talking about all these inspirational stories we’ve seen throughout history and presently during war times or a pandemic where acts of love are presented in the darkest moments and that love runs so deep and powerful and it shines so brightly when people are in a place of suffering. Love is always reminding us that it’s there and will never leave… whereas hate and war and destruction are only cyclical; it comes and goes.  

You’ll be touring this album next year, how excited are you to be able to tour without the necessary covid restrictions?

Very excited, we can all enjoy a normal live show environment again.  

What can fans expect from those shows? What is the vibe you’re going for? 

The venues we’ll be playing on this tour are a little bigger and we’re excited to show everyone our new sound and songs in a live capacity but as always we hope to take everyone on a journey throughout the show of fun, intimacy, and laughter.  

Finally, do you have a message for those who’ve supported you and your music so far?

Our message is a huge thank you for supporting us and our music all this time, we really love and appreciate you all and we can’t wait to introduce you to the next chapter.
