EXCLUSIVE: Kendal Conrad Talks New Single ‘Bodyguard’

Last month Nashville based award-winning singer/songwriter Kendal Conrad shared her stellar new single ‘Bodyguard’. The track has been lifted off her forthcoming EP which is slated for release later this year and ushers in an exciting new chapter for the impressive vocalist.

With this latest offering, she is garnering rave reviews from both critics and fans alike and is taking the growing country scene by storm. Here we talk exclusively to Kendal Conrad to further discuss the release of ‘Bodyguard’ and upcoming EP:

Congratulations on the release of ‘Bodyguard’, how are you finding the response so far?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. The song got over 10,000 streams in under 2 weeks, which was insane.

What was the main message you wanted to convey via the songs lyrical output?

People you love can be disappointing. When they do disappoint you, it’s heartbreaking. With “Bodyguard,” it’s a three-minute song confronting someone about breaking promises they swore to keep.

What are you hoping your listeners will take away from the lyrics?

It’s never too late to stand up for yourself. Loving someone does not give that person the right to walk all over you.

Can you tell us a little about the writing experience and process for the song?

I wrote this one with Matt McVaney (producer) and my mom, Sharen Conrad in Nashville, TN. I had this idea about taking the word “bodyguard” literally. A bodyguard is hired to protect you, but what does that mean? They actually guard your physical body. So I thought… what if I were talking about a romantic relationship gone wrong? A guy promises to protect my heart, but instead, he breaks it. A bodyguard who fails his job.

The track has been lifted off your forthcoming EP, when we can we expect another taste of the record?

I’m hoping to put out another single off of the EP late this fall.

Where did you look to for inspiration when creating this new project?

Myself! I’ve had this vision for the longest time. I love beats, and I also love telling stories. GOOD stories. I wanted to combine the two, and I finally did. It was such a thrill to create the project I had mapped out in my mind for so long.

Is there one song in particular on the record that you’re most excited about sharing?

I already shared it haha! It’s called Leader of the Pack. It’s about being faced with adversity and coming back bigger and better than ever. Give it a listen!

What would you say was the most challenging song to complete on the EP?

Ooo good question! I would have to say ‘Come To Your Senses’, the first single. My mom and I started this song in Bethlehem, PA with Clayton Reilly. We got stuck on the second verse, and I wound up finishing the song almost a year later with Matt McVaney in Nashville, TN.

Do you have any plans to share a full length album at some point this year?

I think we’re in such a “singles” society right now, so not yet! Would love to do that in the future, though.

How does it feel to be releasing new music during this moment in time?

I feel strange promoting myself and my music amid not only the pandemic but the social justice protests as well. I would never want to be insensitive towards these issues, but for me, the music never stops.
