EXCLUSIVE: Krystal King Talks New Single ‘Rhinestone Ring’
On-the-rise country music performer Krystal King is kicking off the new year in style with the release of her standout new single titled ‘Rhinestone Ring’ which is a brilliant tongue-in-cheek offering from the multi-talented singer/songwriter who is ready to push her career to the next level in 2022 and beyond.
Here we chat exclusively with Krystal to discuss the track further:
How does it feel to be releasing new music at the start of 2022?
It has been such a long time coming and I am beyond excited. It has been over a year since I have released new music. This past year, I’ve worked extremely hard to create and prepare materials for upcoming projects. Between Covid and my own transition to life as a full-time musician, things have been hectic and busy. It is so nice to get back to the creative side of what I love and I am so excited to share what I’ve been working on.
You’ve chosen quite a bold way to start the New Year, was there a specific reasoning behind this release date?
You know, I wanted to set the tone for 2022. New Year, New Music. We always have the opportunity to have fresh starts and remake ourselves with the new year. While I dove into my Honky Tonk roots for this song, I want to be more bold and unapologetic in my performance and writing in the future. I tend to be anxious and indecisive as a person. This year, I want to stop letting that hold me back and I want to put out the music I love and that feels right for me. So it was only fitting to do that from the very get-go on January 1st.
Can you give us a little insight into the writing process for this track?
I wrote this with my friend Stefanie Joyce who is one of my favorite writers to work with. This was our first write…and first writes are always kind of like dates. You want to have fun, make a good impression, and write a good song…but you honestly feel incredibly awkward. I had this idea for a Honky Tonk wedding song with “Rhinestone Ring” as the hook. It was the perfect ice breaker song. It was fun and cheeky and it made the writing process so easy. We were just enjoying ourselves and throwing out fun images that we have seen when we play Honky Tonks down on broadway.
Who have you worked with to bring the vision to life?
My Co-writer Stefanie Joyce was a huge part in helping this idea come to life lyrically and melodically. I honestly didn’t play this song much live and never thought I would actually release it. It was just sort of a fun, novelty song. I took it to Mike Loudermilk, a good friend and co-writer of mine who has produced for me in the past. He is also an incredible guitar player, and country pickin’ is his speciality. I wanted to record it to keep it as a demo for pitches or other promotional opportunities. Mike worked his magic and played all the instruments in the track. When I got it back, I just loved it. I wasn’t sure if the general public would like it as much as me, because it is sort of a cheesy 90’s country Honky Tonk song. But, I decided I didn’t care. This song felt like me and in the end, I want to put out music that I like and that is authentic to me. Lastly, we had Amy Brown, master the track to bring it to the next level.
What are you hoping fans take away from the song?
Honestly, I just want the fans to have fun with it. It isn’t a brilliantly written, poetic art piece. It is a fun love song. I want it to make them smile and allow them to laugh. I also want it to be a refreshing change to hear this style of country music again and know it isn’t dead.
Do you have any set goals in mind for the single?
I want this to be a kick-off. I’m releasing this single without a lot of prior promotion or announcement. I am ending an Indie Gogo Campaign I started in November to raise funds for an upcoming album. This song will be a thank you to all those that supported me and will help me dip my toes back into the release process before sharing songs from the album. On another note…I would love it if someone would have a real-life Honky Tonk wedding for a music video! That would make my day.
Looking ahead, what else does 2022 have in store for you?
As I said in the previous question, I just ended an Indie Gogo Campaign to help me finish a 7 song project. I will be ordering the merch and reimaging for this project. My next release will be the first song from the album titled “Housefire.” This will be my first time releasing a cohesive project and I absolutely cannot wait. I’m also trying to expand my touring and begin to travel more this year- hoping to make my way to Wisconsin, the NE to Rhode Island, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Florida! Overall, I just want to keep pushing forward and working hard to create and bring you all the best music that I can.
