EXCLUSIVE: Ward Thomas Talk Busking For Our Planet Initiative

Following on from an enforced year away from the stage and live audiences, British pop-country crossover duo Ward Thomas launched an innovative initiative this year when lockdown restrictions were lifted with their Busking For Our Planet live schedule which sees them playing for fans on the streets around the UK in aid of multiple environmental charities whilst raising awareness around Climate change.

Here we chat exclusively to Catherine and Lizzy to discuss the initiative further ahead of their forthcoming headline tour:

What was the driving force behind launching Busking For Our Planet?

We are both passionate about environmental issues and really wanted to do something ourselves to raise money and awareness about what is happening to our planet. We thought let’s do what we do best and play our music and sing live by busking in many different places around the country to try and spread awareness on both the issues and also the amazing work so many charities and organisations are doing to help our amazing planet.

How have you found the response to the busking sessions so far?

It’s been really great so far. Everyone has been super generous with their donations. It’s definitely a challenge busking as you never know if people are going to turn up or not.

How is the fundraising goal going?

Slow, but steady. It’s growing every week, we are 21% towards our goal so far.

What’s been your favourite city that you’ve busked in so far?

We’d have to say, Winchester… A super warm sunny day and an amazing turnout.

You’re also gearing up for your headline tour, what can fans expect from the upcoming shows?

A tour we’ve been waiting to go on since last April! It’ll consist of many stories and a lot of fun and some moving moments within the show. We can’t wait.

How does it feel to be playing live for people again after the lockdown?

We have played a few festivals and they’ve been brilliant, but we also had our first proper concert in a venue around 2 months ago. It felt really magical for us on stage, as well as the audience. Everyone sang along to many of the songs and you could just tell how much they missed live music, as it brings people together.

You can donate to Ward Thomas’ Busking For Our Planet cause via their Crowdfunding page.
