Mickey Guyton Releases New Single ‘Black Like Me’

African-American country music singer/songwriter Mickey Guyton has shared her brand new single titled ‘Black Like Me’. The piano-led ballad is a timely release and opens a conversation about what it’s really like to be a black woman in America. The track was penned by Guyton and Nathan Chapman, Emma Davidson-Dillon, and Fraser Churchillback in March 2019 during a cross-genre writing camp organised by Warner Chappell and has been produced by Chapman with Forest Whitehead and mixed by Serban Ghenea.

Poignant, emotive, and extremely personal to Mickey Guyton, ‘Black like Me’ is being released at a time when people are finally opening their ears and eyes to what’s happening around them, with global protests happening right now for the Black Lives Matter movement in response to systematic racism and police brutality, this song offers an honest and real insight into what it’s really like being black in the States; “If you think we live in the land of the free, you should try to be black like me,” Guyton sings.

Speaking about the track via social media, Mickey said: “This song was a God moment. He put it on my heart to write it. I thought it was to heal my heart but now I realise it’s meant to heal every heart.”

‘Black Like Me’ follows on from Mickey Guyton’s earlier 2020 release ‘What Are You Gonna Tell Her’ and 2019’s ‘Sister’ and is her most important and honest release to date. Racial inequality has been part of our lives for as long as history has been reported and now in 2020, we are finally stepping up with loud voices to call for an end to systematic racism and for there to be a level playing field for all and justice for every single human being.

With this new single, Mickey further amplifies the conversation and gives a personal insight – a truly remarkable release and one that is very, very important.
