EXCLUSIVE: alyssa Bonagura Talks New Single ‘New Wings’

Last week multi-talented singer/songwriter Alyssa Bonagura returned with her brand new single ‘New wings’ which marked her first official solo single in five years and allowed her the opportunity to showcase the growth she has undergone in the last few years and relaunches her performing career.

Here we chat exclusively with Alyssa Bonagura to discuss the track in more detail:

Congratulations on the release of ‘New Wings’, how does it feel to be back after 5 years away?

Thank you so much! I am so grateful to be back making music. It feels amazing!

What have you learned about yourself and your sound during this five-year hiatus from releasing music?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that it’s really important to always be yourself and never be afraid to write your truth. Sometimes that’s a pretty hard thing to do because with every bit of art you make comes criticism and people telling you “that’ll never work” or “you need to sound more like this,” but that’s the nature of the beast. I’ve learned that it’s ok to say that my music is a little bit of everything that I’ve grown up listening to. Country, pop, rock, alternative.. I love all different genres and I think you can really hear that in my new music.

You penned this song last year, what was it like creating during the shutdown?

To be honest, having the time to just go inward and be home in my studio and make music was such a healing experience for me. I had been on the road for the last 5 years and only ever had a couple of weeks off at home, so the pandemic gave me the slow down I needed to reset and a quiet space to create freely and honestly.

Who did you work with to bring the vision of the track to life?

It was actually the first zoom co-write with producer and songwriter Tawgs Salter. We had never met before and it’s funny meeting someone for the first time on zoom, but he was so lovely and showed up that day with this beautiful track he had started and it was so inspiring and uplifting that I started telling him about all the transformation I felt I was going through, and in a matter of hours New Wings was written and recorded in both of our studios virtually.

What are you hoping listeners take away from the lyrical story?

This song is about understanding that with loss comes new beginnings. The struggles we go through only make us stronger. I want listeners to feel empowered when they hear it and have faith that the best is always yet to come! New wings are coming even when we can’t see them forming in the present moment.

Do you have any set goals in mind for this offering?

I just hope that my music can help people feel united, and realize that they aren’t alone in whatever they’re going through. We all have our New Wings story and I want my fans to feel like they can share that with me always.

Having been away from the merry go round of releasing new music over the past few years, how do you feel the industry has changed in that time?

I think the industry is changing every day. Right now it feels like the Wild West In music and I think that’s a great thing because anyone and everyone can create music on their computers and get it out into the world. As an independent artist, it’s really about being the CEO of your own company and hustling! There’s a lot of working parts and to try and accomplish things on your own is a very hard task. It takes a team of people who really believe in you to help see your vision come to life.

Can we expect this single to act as a launchpad to a full-length project?

Absolutely. I cannot wait to share all the music I’ve been making..

What would you say has been the biggest factor in choosing New Wings as your return single?

The message! I wanted to uplift people after a hard year and let listeners get to know me in an honest way. It’s also giving everyone a small taste of what’s coming next…

Looking ahead, what else does 2021 hold for you?

Can’t wait to get out and play some shows and see people in person again! I’ll also be planning the next single… and the next…. !!!
