EXCLUSIVE: Emily Kate Talks Debut Single ‘Giant’
On Friday, August 7th, fast-rising Canadian country singer/songwriter Emily Kate arrives on the ever-growing scene with the release of her stellar debut single ‘Giant’ which sees her delivering a truly outstanding track that sets the wheels in motion for a huge breakout 2020.
Here we speak exclusively with Emily Kate to find out more about ‘Giant’ and its process to release:
Congratulations on the upcoming release of your debut single, how does it feel to have new music out in the world?
Thank you so much!! Man does it ever feel good! This song “Giant” is so special to me, and it being out in the world is so exciting!! What some people don’t know is it takes more time than you think to develop a song from writing stages into production and then releasing. This song has been in the works for about a year and a half, and to be able to see it all come together and then release the final version is really a dream come true.
How are you finding the promotion side of things during this semi lockdown period?
I have found that everything has slowed down during this time. It is not possible to go out to conferences, meet music industry professionals and contacts that can help you with a release. However, I have also learned that reaching out virtually has helped me a ton. I also find that my social following has been more engaged since the lockdown, and I think that is partially because people are spending more time at home online, and people are listening to more music at this time. So in a way, this lockdown has given me an opportunity to connect and prepare for this release.
Was it always the plan to share your debut track at this time or have your plans changed due to the pandemic?
Originally, this single was supposed to release in March 2020, however that due date got pushed back. Since I was unable to get into the studio to finish recording the vocals on the song, we had to take a step back for a few months. Originally, I was really bummed that the song wasn’t going to release when we had planned it to just because I was so excited to get my first song out to the world, but I really think it was for the best. This lockdown has given me time to think a lot about how I want to promote my debut single, what my goals are, and given me more time to engage with my fan base on social media!
What are you hoping listeners take away from the lyrical story?
I am hoping that people are reminded to believe in themselves when they hear “Giant”. It is an inspirational, soulful country-pop song. The powerful melodies combined with inspirational lyrics leave you feeling empowered. This debut single is certain to resonate with people as we could all use a reminder to believe in ourselves.
Where did you look to for inspiration when writing this song?
Actually, the songwriters of this song are Olivia Wik & Doug Folkins. However, when I first heard this song, I related to it and knew I had to record it. This song came to me at a point in my life when I needed it the most. I was just finishing my business degree at university and I was at a crossroads and was unsure if I should pursue my music career. I was lacking the courage and belief in myself, however, I knew my true passion was music, and this song “Giant” validated that for me. This song is the anthem for anyone who needs a little more courage in their life to become a better version of themselves. It has helped me believe in myself and I hope that one day it will help others believe in themselves too.
Can you tell us a little about what the average recording day was like for this release?
I remember the day when I heard the demo for “Giant”, and I knew this song was special. I went back to my producer Shawn Moore and told him I wanted to record this song and he was completely on board. I then started to work on my vocals on it and my own arrangement of the song. I laid down a rough vocal to start with and then we brought in the musicians in one day to lay down some tracks, which was definitely one of my favourite days. I remember I was sitting on the couch just listening to them play take after take, trying different things here and there, just completely blown away by all the talent. Once we’d gotten the track, I took some time to work with my vocal coach to develop my voice further before I was ready to record this song. Then after the lead vocal as recorded, that is when the pandemic started. However, we still needed to record the background vocals on the song. Eventually, I was able to get back in the studio to finish the vocals, and then Shawn worked his magic to create the full track. That’s why the release date was pushed back to now, but I really think it worked out for the better.
What are your main ambitions and goals for this single?
This single being my debut release, I really hope that people connect to this song and get excited for more to come. I hope it will help me start to carve a name for myself in Canadian Country music, and that this song reaches audiences and new fans that will hopefully support me further in my music career.
Do you have any plans to share an official music video for this offering?
Yes, I do! I have an idea to create a music video for this song, where my fans, friends, and family are all in it. This song to me is an anthem that we all can do anything we set our minds to, and I really feel that this message will resonate with tons of people. So stay tuned for the official announcement and details about how you could be in my music video for “Giant”!
Can we expect this single to act as the first taste of a full length project?
Yes, you totally can! This single is the first off of my Debut EP “All In”. I was actually in the studio last week recording on a few of the other songs, and I can’t wait to put out the rest of the songs out to the world.
What else do you have in the pipeline for 2020?
Looking ahead at 2020-2021 is very exciting! You can expect a ton more music from me that will be released online and possibly on radio as well. I hope to get back to performing as well, however that is a little more uncertain. In addition, I hope to do a Canadian radio tour once my full EP is out. Hopefully, that can happen within 2021, but even if I have to wait longer I know I’ll always push my music career forward and be productive. Thanks so much to you all at Music & Tour News for taking the time to speak with me today!! I had a blast… take care!
