EXCLUSIVE: Morgan Johnston Talks New Single ‘If He Never Broke My Heart’, And Upcoming EP
Nashville based country crossover singer/songwriter Morgan Johnson will share her brand new single ‘If He Never Broke My Heart’ on August 7th and it is set to be one of the most impressive cross-genre tracks of the year. The single is acting as the lead release off Johnston’s forthcoming stripped-back EP which will drop this Fall and looks set to further push the performer into the mainstream sphere.
Here we talk exclusively to Morgan Johnston to find out more about her newest offering:
Your new single drops on August 7th how excited are you to be sharing the track?
I’ve been excited about this song since the day we wrote it so I’m really looking forward to sharing it with the world! I wrote this song with Brandy Neelly and Kaylin Roberson.
What are you hoping fans take away from the lyrical story?
I call this my silver lining song. I think that I’ve spent a lot of time thinking that I know what’s best for me. Heartbreak has a way of making you feel like you’ll never love again. But I’ve learned that sometimes there is a reason love, an opportunity or any situation doesn’t work. I hope that listening to this song makes people remember that as much as you think you know what is best for you, if you give life a little time to work itself out, it will show you why certain things didn’t work out. It will show you that what you thought you were so sure was meant for you, actually wasn’t, because there’s something even better around the corner.
The song acts as the lead off your forthcoming EP, how was the writing process for that project?
The writing process for this project was very organic. There was no grand theme behind the songs that I chose when you put them together other than they’re little pieces of my life and story. They’re mostly a collaboration of a few songs I’ve written in Nashville over my 3 years here that speak to my heart and my artistry.
How does it feel to be sharing new music during this time period?
It’s a little strange if I am being honest. It’s definitely like navigating a new path for me but I’m also seeing it as a chance to add some light to hard times. We’re all in the same boat and we just have to keep on keeping on. I’ve always turned to music as a listener or as a creator and I’m excited about this challenge and new chapter 🙂
What are you hoping your new releases bring to the world during these dark days?
This EP is a mixture of hope, heartache, love, and sass. I hope it makes you feel hopeful, appreciative of your loved ones, and inspired to love and own who you are.
What was the recording process like for this new single and EP?
I recorded all 3 of these songs with Matt Geroux. He’s an incredible producer and I’ve loved working with him. Tim Galloway is a music wizard and he played every single instrument on these tracks. I decided to do this EP stripped down to really capture the vulnerability of the stories and songwriting behind these songs. In a world where I’m always trying to prove that “I know who I am as an artist” I wanted to focus more on “I know who I am as a person”
You’ve also confirmed that a music video will be shared soon too, what can cans expect from the visual?
Yes! Lexy Kady shot this music video at one of my best friends high rise apartments in Nashville, right at sunset! It was a beautiful view, emotional and simply focusing on the feelings of the song. I’m super excited to share!
How do you feel music videos support the overall release of singles these days?
I think a lot of creators see their art in several forms. Usually, words and melodies translate into visions and pictures. I think that music videos give artists an opportunity to create another perspective on their songs and bring a whole new dimension of meaning to their words.
Do you have any set goals in mind for this release?
My goal is to connect with anyone who is willing to listen on a deeper level.
What else can listeners expect from you this year?
Along with the EP, I have a collaboration in the works for the fall 🙂 I can’t say too much about it right now but I can’t wait for what’s coming!
