EXCLUSIVE: Tenille Townes Talks New Single ‘Girl Who Didn’t Care’
Canadian country music superstar Tenille Townes has today (Friday, June 25th) released her outstanding single titled ‘Girl Who Didn’t Care’ which kick-starts the beginning of an exciting new musical chapter that promises to be her most successful yet as she demonstrated her incredible vocal talent.
Here we chat exclusively with Tenille Townes to discuss the track in more detail:
How does it feel to beginning a new musical chapter with this release?
I’m truly so excited to be at the beginning of this new chapter. These songs came from a very reflective place for me this past year, and sonically from a longing for the road missing live shows. I can’t wait to share more soon with you guys, but I’m so thrilled to be celebrating this first release with Girl Who Didn’t Care!
Can you give us a little insight into the writing and recording process for this track?
This song was written on zoom with two new friends that I hadn’t met in person before!! We were talking before we wrote, about what we’ve been up to and David had this musical start and Steph started humming a melody that reminded me of the feeling I had been having on my walks around my neighborhood, admiring sidewalk chalk art and hearing laughter in the backyards from neighbor kids. Witnessing that wonder made me think about the courage we all have as little kids, and how important that is to hold on to. I’m so thankful for how this song came to life, prevailing across the distance! David sent music back and forth, and I’ve been learning to record vocals at home and sent them to him from my little music room.
What was it like working with David and Steph to bring this vision to life?
They are both such wonderful human beings I’m now thankful to call friends and we had so much fun working on this song together via zoom. I loved all being on the same page of the message of this song as we were working on it, all thinking back to the kind of courageous kids we used to be, dreaming of getting to do the things we’re doing now! It really does amaze me that a song will always find a way to come into the world. This year has proved that more than ever!
This is the first release off your new project, what kind of vibe can we expect from you during this new era?
My favourite place to write from is the observer perspective, but this year and all its reflective space has challenged me to dig more into my own emotions and I think this new season of music is coming out a little more personal. And musically, the production is truly anchored in dreaming about being on the road and how these songs will feel in a set, and the adventure that I want to bring everybody on through these songs live.
Who have you been working with for these new songs that will feature on album number 2?
Along with Steph Jones and David Pramik, I’ve been writing a lot with Wrabel. His ability to articulate emotion in a lyric is incredible and his voice is just so stunning. I can’t wait to share more of the songs we’ve been working on.
What are you hoping listeners will take away from the song’s lyrical story?
I hope that people feel reminded of the little dreamer they used to be. The one who didn’t care what anybody else thought, or how far away a crazy dream was, relentlessly believing in the good in the world. I know I could use more of that wonder in my life right now, and I hope people feel this as an invitation to find some.
Do you have any set goals in mind for what you’d like to achieve with this release?
My goal always in music is to remind people they are not alone. I hope this song inspires people to remember the courage they used to have before the world and society started to let it fade and that it brings comfort to people listening all over the world that it’s possible to feel that courage again. I hope they sing along at the top of their lungs!!
Creatively, what’s been inspiring your music this time around?
There has been so much happening in the world this past little while. So much heaviness with health and loneliness and wrestling of change, and music for me is a way to both process and understand how I’m feeling, and also to escape to a safe place inside a song. This year, leaning on music, has meant more to me than ever before in my life. I’ve been working on things in my heart this past year, and I think the music has been inspired by all kinds of emotions around that.
Do you have any plans to tour your new music?
Yess!!!!! I am so honoured to be back on the road this summer with Brothers Osborne, who I love so very much. And I promise as soon as we can secure travel plans to book a tour, I’ll be on the first plane back to the UK to see everybody! Truly one of my favourite places to share music on the planet, and I can’t wait until we can all be together again!
How has this past year affected your artistry?
I think this past year has made me even more thankful for every moment we’re given. And has shown me a wider perspective on the things that matter most to me to represent and talk about in my music, in this season of my life right now. I can’t wait to share more of what I’ve been working on!
