EP REVIEW: Mickey Guyton’s ‘Bridges’

American vocal powerhouse Mickey Guyon has shared her stunning new EP ‘Bridges’ which is a truly incredible collection of emotive, uplifting, and inspiring tracks that call for real change in the world and unity between all. Delivering a fresh sonic sound that incorporates classic, and modern country styles the singer/songwriter has created a wonderful record.

Beginning with the breakout single ‘Heaven Down Here’ the EP opens with a prayer to God asking for help to heal the world as we continue to see fighting and hatred amongst us. The global Black Lives Matter campaign and the Coronavirus pandemic have divided as many as it has brought together and this soaring ballad asks for the Lord to send a helping hand so we can all heal and stand side by side in love.

Up next is the title track which features a truly mesmerizing choir backdrop that isn’t actually a choir at all in fact it is Mickey’s vocal used for all the collective voices where technology is used to create different vocal tones in order to create the stunning choir collective. The track is a major standout and is another one that inspires us to take a stand.

The third track is ‘What Are You Going To Tell Her’ which is a song that shines a light on Mickey Guyton’s gorgeous vocal tone as she delivers a thought-provoking lyrical story that asks the listener what are you going to tell her? Do we create a world of rainbows for our little girls or do we raise them so they know the world is often a cruel place? Inspirational, and emotive this is one that makes us sit with ourselves and dig a little deeper.

‘Rosé’ comes next which drives the project into new avenues and offers a lighter approach and is a fun, uptempo country track that is reminiscent of Maren Morris as Guyton showcases her quirky songwriting talent as she once again gives us a strong lyrical message that is overlayed with a toe-tapping, upbeat backdrop.

The penultimate track comes in the form of ‘Salt’ which is anther upbeat offering that features a pop-infused sonic fusion while the lyrics warn of a heartbreaker that is overlayed with an uptempo production allowing for the EP to deliver an exciting fusion of sonic styles whilst shining a light on Mickey’s gorgeous vocal tone.

The ‘Bridges’ record closes out with the heartfelt biographical ‘Black Like Me’ which was penned by Mickey Guyton last year and tells the heartbreaking story of what it is really like living in America “the land of the free” when you are Black. Emotive, and inspiration the soaring ballad is one of the best songs to be released this century and offers a truly eye-opening insight into the systematic racism that brings the US to its knees.

Overall the EP is a wonderful collection of poignant lyrical stories, inspiring messages, and upbeat anthems that allows for Guyton to showcase to the world that she is one of the finest country music artists currently on the scene and as she continues to create music that touches our hearts then it won’t be too long until her music is at the top of the charts around the world.
