EXCLUSIVE: Casey Cattie Talks New Single ‘Half Love’

Following on from her stellar debut single ‘Ex-Whatever’, on-the-rise country singer/songwriter Casey Cattie last month dropped her standout sophomore track titled ‘Half Love’ which has given her the opportunity to put the spotlight on her vocal, and songwriting maturity and musical growth.

Here we speak exclusively with Casey Cattie to discuss the track further:

Congratulations on the release of your new single, how have you found the response so far?

Thank you so much! I’m so excited that people are loving this second single just as much as they loved the first one, ‘Ex-Whatever’. Spotify added ‘Half Love’ to their Fresh Finds: Country editorial playlist this past week and I once again got emotional. Ha! Every playlist add from Spotify feels like Christmas morning to me!

Who did you work with to bring the track to life?

I wrote ‘Half Love’ with my best friend, Hannah May Allison, and one of our buddies Sean Swenson. My new friend Zachary Manno produced it for me, and my other new friend, Jonah van Bemmeslen helped me with the photos and artwork.

What was the overall writing process like for you?

Funny enough, we wrote this song a few years back, and it was one of those songs that just kept popping back up because of how catchy the melody is and how relatable the lyrics are. My co-writers and I wanted to reflect on this phenomenon in modern dating culture where so many people date with only one foot in, ya know? I’ve been in these situations in which I was excited about a guy doing the bare minimum for me, and this song, ‘Half Love’, was the realization that half love, or for lack of better words, half-assed love, wasn’t going to cut it for me. Unfortunately for me, it took a relationship in which I was walked all over in to realize what I really deserve, and what I really deserve is someone who isn’t afraid to fall in love.

Do you have a favourite line from the song?

*Slightly inappropriate, but honest truth: There’s a little Easter egg in this song… The original lyric of the chorus was “I ain’t gonna waste my time playing games, I’m over that *shit*, grown out of that phase so back up, because I don’t need no half love.” I’m obsessed with this lyric and think this is the whole theme of the song!

What are you hoping listeners take away from the lyrical story?

I’m hoping that listeners can be comforted by the fact that they’re not alone in realizing after a relationship ends that they had what I like to call “blinders” on throughout the relationship. Sometimes when you’re so into someone, you don’t see the bad stuff, and instead, you praise all the things they’re doing right. At the end of the day though, it’s what you take and learn from the relationship after you reflect on what went wrong.

What are you hoping to achieve with this release?

My experience with my debut single, ‘Ex-Whatever,’ was so unreal to me, and even if I have half of the experience of that one, I’ll be so satisfied. I spent 7 years in Nashville writing songs for other artists and FINALLY decided to release my own music this past August. Spotify immediately added ‘Ex-Whatever’ to New Music Nashville upon release, and eventually, it was added to both Fresh Finds: Country and Young Nashville (where it still is sitting at over 20k streams)! As an independent artist, this is almost unheard of, and it really relit the fire for me.

Looking ahead, what does the rest of 2021 look like for you?

I’m actually in school currently, getting a second Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, so the rest of this year will be spent with my head in the books while promoting ‘Half Love’ and preparing for my third single to drop sometime in the spring of 2022. I’m excited to spend the holidays with friends and family and I’m thrilled that all of a sudden I have a million more things to share with them
