EXCLUSIVE: JP Saxe Talks ‘Line By Line’ Collaboration With Maren Morris

Earlier this year, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter JP Saxe teamed up with country music superstar Maren Morris on the standout ‘Line By Line’ with the collaboration fast becoming one of the most revered duets of the year thanks to its gorgeous lyrical melody and stunning country production.

Here we chat exclusively with JP Saxe to discuss the collab further:

Congratulations on the release of Line By Line, how are you finding the response so far?

Thank you so much, the response has been very kind you know the song is certainly from a songwriters perspective and me and Maren struggling to summarise these huge loves you know we’re both very in love with our partners, and fitting that into a single song is always a challenge, so it’s nice to see the song being related to by other musicians but I think the idea that you know a feeling is too big to describe is something that certainly goes beyond just writers so it’s been nice to see it relate to all kinds of people.

You’ve teamed up with Maren Morris for this single, how did that collaboration come about?

Well, initially I tweeted that I was a huge Maren Morris fan and to my elation and surprise she tweeted back saying she liked my songs too so we talked about getting into the studio together and we wrote ‘Line By Line’ on day 2.

How did you find the process of working with Maren?

Well, Maren is fu*king incredible she’s an incredible writer, an incredible singer, and working with her was as amazing as I thought it would be.

What’s it been like taking a foray into the country music world with this release?

You know I didn’t really think about it I’m just a huge Maren Morris fan and didn’t think “hey I’ll try country music” I just love songwriting and I love songwriting in whatever genre pond that means I’m dipping my toes into.

What are you hoping listeners take away from the song’s lyrical story?

I hope they think something about their own lives and not something about mine I think a song does its job best when it connects people to themselves and not to the person singing it.

What was the overall writing experience like for this offering?

Very easy, I mean when a conversation is as dynamic as the one Maren, Jimmie, and I had that day in the session the song kinds just stems right from the conversation I mean the song is the conversation I think that’s why it feels so honest so from our hearts because the song is really just what we were saying to each other in the room talking about the people we loved

Along with sharing the audio you’ve also released the official music video, who did you work with to bring the visual treatment to life?

The director of the video name’s Nick Leopold. I love Nick’s surreal approach to songs because you know sometimes if you’re too literal about a story in a music video, at least to me, it’s kinda boring so you know the song is about a love that feels larger than life so seeing that in and out of this world kinda way which is what we were going for in the music video is really exciting to me.

How did you find the process of filming with Maren and having to adhere to COVID guidelines?

Well, we were all tested we all wore masks, the only time we were not wearing masks was when we were on set well when just Maren and I were getting filmed. You know the video was two homies talking about people they loved anyway so we never had to be that close together so it all worked out.

Can you tell us a little about your long-term goals for the Line By Line release?

I hope seventeen billion people hear the song I hope they all love it very much.

The track will be featured on your forthcoming debut album, can we expect any further duets to be included on the project?

Well, there’s my duet with Julia Michaels ‘If The World Was Ending’ which will be on the album and it’ll be just those two I don’t know if that’s information I’m supposed to share with the press but whatever, but no just those two.
