EXCLUSIVE: Sam Phelps Talks New EP ‘Talking To A Friend’

Country-Americana talent Sam Phelps recently wowed his growing listenership with his latest EP ‘Talking To A Friend’ which features an eclectic, evolved tracklist of songs that enhance the singer/songwriters’ musicianship and highlight his effective storytelling skill, and standout vocal.

Here we chat exclusively with Sam Phelps to discuss the record in more detail:

Congratulations on the release of your new EP, how have you found the response so far?

So far the response has been great! Mostly kind things said which is always good.

How are you finding the experience of releasing new music during this time?

It’s been very therapeutic. Something to shoot for and look forward to. Not feel like I’m just wasting time in my bedroom like I always do.

What was the overall writing experience like for this record?

It was good. What little distractions I usually have were not there. Getting all the thoughts down to chords.

Who have you worked with to bring this vision to life?

Very thankful for the team on this one. Molly Lamb for the idea, connections, and PR. Sean Walsh for production, the band “After Dark” Ray Clark and Brian Geltner, Charlie Rauh for the mastering, and Courtney Sultan for “prettying” everything up after.

What are you hoping listeners take away from this body of work?

I hope they just get some substance from it. Something to relate to. Maybe sing along with. I’d like to write some songs that are not just “good time” songs but those “free time” songs as well.

Do you have a personal favourite song off the tracklist?

I’d say the title track is my favorite. It’s the only time I caught like one line and all the other lines just kept coming. I couldn’t move the pen fast enough!

Do you have any set goals in mind for this release?

I’d say just to get the name out. Get some momentum of any sort.

Looking ahead, what else can we expect from you this year?

Hopefully maybe a little touring without hurting myself or anyone else. And definitely more music.
